Your Mom Still Texts Me

Verse 1

Piano and voice

Woke up to my phone at a quarter past nineA cake and a heart and "happy birthday, sweetheart"She signs every message with her first and last nameLike I don't know who she is, like I don't know her car

Pre-Chorus

And I type "thank you" and I delete itAnd I type "I miss him" and I delete itAnd I send her back a heart

Chorus

Your mom still texts me happy birthdayShe still asks me how school's goingShe still sends me pictures of the dogAnd she doesn't know, she doesn't knowThat her son forgot meThat he's got somebody newYour mom still texts me happy birthdayWhy don't you

Verse 2

She taught me how to make her lemon barsIn the kitchen where you kissed me by the fridgeI still make them every time I'm sadI made them twice this week, I made them twice

Pre-Chorus

And I type "is he happy" and I delete itAnd I type "does he ask" and I delete itAnd I send her back a heart

Chorus

Your mom still texts me happy birthdayShe still asks me how school's goingShe still sends me pictures of the dogAnd she doesn't know, she doesn't knowThat her son forgot meThat he's got somebody newYour mom still texts me happy birthdayWhy don't you

Bridge

Drums and strings rise, voice belting

Did you tell her it was meDid you tell her that I criedDid you tell her you were sorryOr just that it was time'Cause she still calls me sweetheartLike I'm still part of the planAnd I can't be the one to tell herI was just a girl you had

Final Chorus

Soaring, then pulling back to piano

Your mom still texts me happy birthdayShe still asks me how school's goingShe still sends me pictures of the dogAnd she doesn't know, she doesn't knowThat her son forgot meThat he's got somebody newYour mom remembered my birthdayWhy didn't you

Outro

Piano alone, whispered
