Warm Side of the Bed

Verse 1

Fingerpicked guitar and voice

Twenty to six and I'm turning the keyGuitar on my back and the night still in meYou're lacing your shoes in the hall with the light offHair pinned up and your badge on, half asleep

Pre-Chorus

You say "there's soup on the stove"I say "call in sick," like I always doThen the door clicks and the flat goes quietAnd the whole room still smells like you

Chorus

So I sleep on the warm side of the bedWhere you were a minute agoSome folks get the whole of SundayWe get ten minutes and a kettleAnd a kiss by the door in the coldSo I sleep on the warm side of the bedWhere you were a minute ago

Verse 2

Soft piano joins

We've been living in notes on the fridge for a year"Buy milk," "I love you," "the boiler's gone weird"And last night you left one on my pillowIt said "one day let's both wake up here"

Pre-Chorus

You say "it won't be like this forever"I say "I know," like I always doThen the door clicks and the flat goes quietAnd the whole room still smells like you

Chorus

So I sleep on the warm side of the bedWhere you were a minute agoSome folks get the whole of SundayWe get ten minutes and a kettleAnd a kiss by the door in the coldSo I sleep on the warm side of the bedWhere you were a minute ago

Bridge

Falsetto, then building to a gritty belt

So I gave up the Friday nights at the AnchorTook the Sunday lunches and the weddings insteadAnd tomorrow when your alarm goes at fiveI'll already be out of bedWith the kettle on and down on one kneeWith the only question left

Final Chorus

Strings and full band, voice wide open

Then we'll sleep on the warm side of the bedWhere we both were a minute agoLet them keep their Sunday morningsWe'll have ten minutes and a kettleAnd a kiss that doesn't have to goAnd we'll sleep on the warm side of the bedWhere we both were a minute ago

Outro

Guitar and voice, hushed

Twenty to sixStay
