Save Me a Seat

Intro

Soft felt piano, a room holding its breath

Verse 1

I still reach for the phone on the drive homeSunday at five, like you're waiting on the lineI got your recipes all wrong this ThanksgivingAnd nobody said a word, but we all cried

Pre-Chorus

They say you're somewhere betterSomewhere the hurting stopsWell, if that's true, MamaI've got one thing to ask

Chorus

Save me a seatSomewhere near the lightKeep your coffee warmAnd leave the porch light on at nightI'm not ready yetI've got some living left to doBut when my time comes, MamaSave me a seat next to you

Verse 2

I found your handwriting in the Bible by the bedAll the names you prayed for, and mine was underlinedI didn't know you worried every night about meI didn't know I was the reason you stayed up that late

Bridge

Everything drops to piano and a single held note

And I'll live the kind of lifeYou'd be proud to hear aboutI'll hold my babies like you held meI'll let the whole world see you in me

Final Chorus

Gospel choir and strings, voice cracking wide open

Save me a seatSomewhere near the lightKeep your coffee warmAnd leave the porch light on at nightI'm not ready yetBut I know you'll wait for me, I do'Cause when my time comes, MamaThere's a seat saved next to you

Outro

Piano alone, whispered

Save me a seat
