Pile of Coats

Verse 1

Muted piano and voice

Somebody's birthday, somebody's houseBass through the floorboards, I can't find a way outSo I hide in the bedroom where they throw all the coatsAnd you're already in here, sitting in the dark alone

Pre-Chorus

You say "I'm not good at parties"I say "me neither, I just came for the cake"And you laugh like it hurts a littleLike you've never laughed by mistake

Chorus

On a pile of other people's coatsWe found the only quiet in this houseEverybody's dancing to a song we both hateAnd nobody knows we're goneOn a pile of other people's coatsYour shoulder's warmer than it looksI don't know your name, but I knowI'd stay in here all night if I could

Verse 2

Soft sub bass enters

Somebody's jacket's got a lighter and a noteSomebody's scarf smells like a girl I used to knowYou tell me that your brother made you come tonightI tell you that I'm leaving, and I never do, I lie

Pre-Chorus

You say "we should go back out there"I say "yeah, in a minute," and we don'tAnd the music gets louder through the wallAnd we get smaller in the coats

Chorus

On a pile of other people's coatsWe found the only quiet in this houseEverybody's dancing to a song we both hateAnd nobody knows we're goneOn a pile of other people's coatsYour shoulder's warmer than it looksI don't know your name, but I knowI'd stay in here all night if I could

Bridge

Everything drops to breath and sub bass, then swells

And when they come for their coats at twoThey'll find us there asleepAnd they'll pull their jackets out from underAnd we won't even move

Final Chorus

Distorted guitars swell, voice breaking open

On a pile of other people's coatsWe found the only quiet in this houseEverybody's leaving and they're taking all the coatsBut nobody's taking youOn a pile of other people's coatsI finally asked your nameAnd I'll wear it like a jacketAll the way home in the rain

Outro

Piano alone

Other people's coatsYour name
