Little Boots

Intro

Fingerpicked guitar, boots on a wooden porch

Verse 1

Found him in the mudroom wearing my old bootsLaces trailing, grinning like he'd grownSaid "Daddy, look, I'm walking just like you"And the floor went out from under me alone

Pre-Chorus

'Cause I know where these boots have beenEvery bar, every ditch, every door I shouldn't have gone in

Chorus

Little boots in my big tracksFollowing me down every road I takeLittle boots, there's no going backHe's gonna step in every step I makeSo Lord, straighten out my stridePoint these old boots to the other sideIf he's gonna walk where his daddy's beenI'd better start walking like a better man

Verse 2

He copies how I tip my hat to strangersHow I cuss at the radio in the truckAnd last night he poured his juice in a coffee cupAnd raised it like his daddy does

Pre-Chorus

And I know what that glass has costEvery Christmas, every promise that I lost

Chorus

Little boots in my big tracksFollowing me down every road I takeLittle boots, there's no going backHe's gonna step in every step I makeSo Lord, straighten out my stridePoint these old boots to the other sideIf he's gonna walk where his daddy's beenI'd better start walking like a better man

Bridge

Organ swells, choir hums

Poured it out in the sink tonightWatched it circle like the years went downThen I sat on the porch with my boy on my kneeAnd showed him how to tie them right

Full band, choir, voice tearing open

Little boots in my big tracksFollowing me down every road I takeLittle boots, there's no going backSo I'll be careful with the steps I makeLord, you straightened out my stridePointed these old boots to the other sideNow he's gonna walk where his daddy's beenAnd his daddy's walking like a better man
