Lawn Chair

Verse 1

Acoustic guitar and voice

There were four of us from Tulsa with a boat that wouldn't runWe'd push it off the sandbar and we'd cuss it in the sunTommy had a laugh that you could hear across the lakeAnd a Ford he drove too fast down that old county road in May

Chorus

So every summer on the Fourth of JulyWe drive out to the water when the sky turns red and goldWe set up four lawn chairs and a cooler by the fireAnd we still save him a lawn chairWe still save him a lawn chair

Verse 2

Harmonica joins

It rained the day we buried him, the preacher got his name wrongHis mama held my hand so tight I thought she'd break the boneWe carried him in blue jeans 'cause he'd have hated a suitAnd we swore right there we'd never let the summer lose him too

Chorus

So every summer on the Fourth of JulyWe drive out to the water when the sky turns red and goldWe set up four lawn chairs and a cooler by the fireAnd we still save him a lawn chairWe still save him a lawn chair

Verse 3

Now Danny's got a baby and a job out in DallasAnd I've got some gray in my beard I didn't ask forBut we still pull up at sundown with a can of his brandAnd pour it in the lake like he's holding out his hand

Bridge

Everything drops to harmonica and guitar

And the fireworks go upAnd nobody says a wordWe just look at that empty chairLike it's the loudest thing we've heard

Final Chorus

Full band, voice cracking and shouting

So every summer on the Fourth of JulyWe drive out to the water when the sky turns red and goldWe set up four lawn chairs and a cooler by the fireAnd we still save him a lawn chairYeah, we still save him a lawn chair

Outro

Harmonica alone, fading
