Every Sunday

Verse 1

Acoustic guitar and voice

I wrote you every Sunday from a bunk that wasn't mineTold you 'bout the desert and the way the stars don't shineLike they do back in Muskogee off the county roadWhere you kissed me on the tailgate, said you'd wait for me to come home

Chorus

And every Sunday I'd write it downEvery Sunday I'd wait for the soundOf the mail call bell and my name in the airEvery Sunday you were thereTill you weren't there

Verse 2

Harmonica joins

Your letters got shorter, "the weather's been fine""Your mama says hello," then just your name signedAnd I read 'em by a flashlight till the paper wore thinLike I could find the part where you still let me in

Chorus

And every Sunday I'd write it downEvery Sunday I'd wait for the soundOf the mail call bell and my name in the airEvery Sunday you were thereTill you weren't there

Verse 3

Came home in December with a duffel and a ringFound you at the Dairy Freeze with a boy from Pryor CreekYou said "Wes, I tried, but a letter ain't a man"And I said "Darlin', you're right," and I shook the young man's hand

Bridge

Everything drops to harmonica and guitar

Now I still write on SundaysI just don't send 'em anymoreThere's a shoebox full of stampsSitting by the front door

Final Chorus

Full band, voice cracking and shouting

And every Sunday I write it downEvery Sunday I wait for the soundOf a truck in the drive and your boots on the stairEvery Sunday you're not thereEvery Sunday you're not there
