Double Shift

Verse 1

Talk-sung over acoustic guitar and laid-back drums

Clock in at six, the lot's still darkForklift singing that same old songMama's got a picture on the fridgeA little yellow house in GarnerWith a front porch she's never had

Pre-Chorus

Every hour is another boardEvery paycheck is a nail

Chorus

I'm working a double shiftBuilding a house with my handsOne day she'll have the keysI'm working a double shift

Verse 2

Boss man says I look so tiredI say, sir, I look like herShe did doubles raising me aloneNow I'm paying back the hours

Pre-Chorus

Every hour is another boardEvery paycheck is a nail

Chorus

Banjo and 808s enter

I'm working a double shiftBuilding a house with my handsOne day she'll have the keysI'm working a double shift

Bridge

Soulful, stripped back

When I finally hand her that keyI'm sleeping for a whole week

Final Chorus

Full and hopeful, singalong

I'm working a double shiftBuilding a house with my handsOne day she'll have the keysI'm working a double shiftI'm working a double shiftBuilding a house with my handsOne day she'll have the keysI'm working a double shift
