Cover-Up

Verse 1

Clean guitar and voice

Tuesday at the shop on Sunset with a twenty-dollar tipYour name across my ribs in a font you pickedThe artist says "what do you want instead, a rose, a skull, a snake?"And I sit there in the chair with nothing I can think to say

Pre-Chorus

And she's waiting with the needleAnd the needle's waiting on me

Chorus

Cover it up, cover it upPut a dragon on it, put a sunset on it, I don't careCover it up, cover it upBut there's nothing that I want to put in thereEvery picture that she shows meI just see your face insteadCover it upBut you're still under the ink

Verse 2

I've been drinking with my brother, I've been kissing girls I don't knowI've been singing in arenas, telling strangers that I'm wholeAnd every morning in the mirror with my shirt off in the lightThere you are across my ribs like you never said goodbye

Bridge

Drums drop out, voice cracking

So I tip her twenty dollarsAnd I tell her "not today"And I button up my shirtAnd I walk out in the rain

Final Chorus

Full band, yelping high

I couldn't cover it up, cover it upCouldn't put a dragon on it, couldn't put a sunset on it thereI couldn't cover it up, cover it up'Cause there's nothing else I want to wearEvery picture that she showed meI just saw your face insteadSo I'll keep itYou're still under the ink

Outro

Guitar alone

Not today
