Bleed Through

Verse 1

Fingerpicked guitar and voice

Senior year we climbed the water tower on a dareI held the can, you held the flashlight, and your hand was in my hairWe wrote "W and J" in letters three feet highWhere the whole town had to see it every time they drove by

Pre-Chorus

The county came in AugustRolled it gray from top to groundAnd I left that fall for HoustonSwore I'd never come back around

Chorus

But some things bleed throughNo matter how many coats you useWhen the rain comes down on County Road 9You can still see me and youI've been gone for fifteen yearsGot a ring, got a life, got a viewBut some things bleed through

Verse 2

Hammond organ joins

Came home for Daddy's funeral in a borrowed Sunday tieAnd the sky opened up on the drive in from the county lineI pulled off by the feed store with the wipers going slowAnd there we were in faded letters, like we never let it go

Pre-Chorus

I heard you married BobbyHeard you've got a boy of nineAnd I hope he's got your laughAnd I hope you never think of mine

Chorus

But some things bleed throughNo matter how many coats you useWhen the rain comes down on County Road 9You can still see me and youI've been gone for fifteen yearsGot a ring, got a life, got a viewBut some things bleed through

Bridge

Organ swells, band drops to half-time

I won't call you, I won't stop byI'll be back in Houston by tonightLet the sun come out and dry the towerLet it all go gray again

Final Chorus

Full band, voice tearing open

'Cause some things bleed throughNo matter how many coats you useEvery time it rains back homeI'll be standing under youI've been gone for fifteen yearsAnd I'll be gone for fifty moreBut some things bleed through
