Birthday Candles

Verse 1

Piano and voice

Twenty candles on a grocery cakeMy roommates sang it way off keyMy phone was face-up by the frostingEvery buzz was just my momEvery year you texted first

Pre-Chorus

Don't waste the wish, they told meBlow them out and let it go

Chorus

Eyes closed on the birthday candlesWished for you againTwenty years and I'm still stupidEyes closed on the birthday candles

Verse 2

At midnight you liked my photoDidn't type a single wordI read that heart like a letterIt was not a letter

Pre-Chorus

Don't waste the wish, they told meBlow them out and let it go

Chorus

Drums and strings enter

Eyes closed on the birthday candlesWished for you againTwenty years and I'm still stupidEyes closed on the birthday candles

Bridge

Building to a raw belt

Maybe birthday wishes take a yearMaybe I should stop wishing, then

Final Chorus

Full and soaring, then falling back to piano

Eyes closed on the birthday candlesWished for you againTwenty years and I'm still stupidEyes closed on the birthday candlesEyes closed on the birthday candlesWished for me againTwenty years and I'm still stupidEyes closed on the birthday candles
