Before I Sit Down

Bar room murmur, a glass set down on wood, slide guitar

Verse 1

Friday night at the Silver SpurSame neon buzzing like it did with herJimmy sees my truck pull into the lotAnd he's already reaching for the top shelf stock

Pre-Chorus

I don't have to say a wordEverybody here has heard

Chorus

He pours it before I sit downEverybody in this town knows why I'm aroundSame stool at the end of the barWhere she kissed me, where she left, where we fell apartI keep coming back like she'll come back aroundAnd he pours it before I sit down

Verse 2

Her sister waits tables on Tuesday and ThursdayShe won't look at me, but she tells me she's happyMarried a banker out in TennesseeGot a house with a porch like she wanted from me

Organ swells, band drops to half-time

Tonight Jimmy slid me a coffee insteadPut a hand on my shoulder and here's what he said"Son, that stool ain't a church, and she ain't a prayerAnd you ain't gonna find her sitting there"

Final Chorus

Full band, voice tearing open

So I'm standing up before I sit downLeaving a twenty and a goodbye on the counter nowSame stool at the end of the barCan keep her kiss and her leaving and the whole broken heartI ain't coming back to wait for her aroundI'm walking out before I sit down

Outro

Door swinging shut, slide guitar fading

Before I sit down
